⏲ Figures collected on 8 November 2025
Average market prices for an economy car (low season to high season), indicative only: they vary with the season, the model and how early you book. This is not the price paid, just a benchmark to compare.
If you book through this link, FirstHand earns a commission from the merchant, at no extra cost to you. That is what funds the on-the-ground checks.
The ultra-budget option (with a deposit): Movis via DiscoverCars
If you hold a real CREDIT card and want the floor price, go through DiscoverCars with a mid-tier local like Movis. The daily rate drops, but expect a 450 to 600 € hold and a far pickier return inspection.
Do you actually need a car in Tangier?
Optional for Tangier itself, but a blessing for the backcountry. If you stick to the medina, skip it. For the coast road to Asilah or climbing into the Rif up to Chefchaouen without bending to CTM bus timetables, the no-deposit option changes everything.
When NOT to rent here
If you stay downtown or in the Kasbah: the streets are ultra-steep, congested, and parking near Place du 9-Avril is a nightmare. For the medina, Place des Nations and the seafront I did everything on foot and in the blue petits taxis (meter on request, 15 to 25 MAD a ride). I only took the car to leave town for Chefchaouen and Cap Spartel.
Where you pick up the car
→ Meet & greet at TNG airport, the agent waits with a sign
- 01Customs at TNG: budget around 40 minutes before you reach the central arrivals door.
- 02No desk to hunt for with my option: the local agent was waiting at the central parking meeting point, sign with my name.
- 03Paper contract, walk-around (a white Dacia Sandero): 20 minutes and I had the keys.
The fuel trap
“Same to same” policy. I got the car at a third of a tank, to return at a third. To dodge the classic return-time scam, I filmed the gauge with the agent next to me before driving off.
At the counter: what they will push
To refuse politely
- The ~130 MAD/day “full protection” if your booking already includes excess coverage
- The prepaid fuel package, you return at the level you received, any surplus is lost
To insist on
- A video of the gauge and odometer, taken in front of the agent before leaving
- The agent's direct WhatsApp number to arrange the return
What I experienced
Paying the balance in cash (in euros) on the car's hood, in the middle of the airport parking lot, is surprising the first time, then ruthlessly efficient. No terminal rejecting the card, no limit.
At return time I called the agent on WhatsApp 20 minutes out. He met me at the drop-off, checked the fuel level, walked around the body in 2 minutes, and wished me a good flight.
The anxious questions (the real ones)
+Can you rent a car in Tangier without a credit card?
Yes. Localrent's “no deposit” filter lists local agencies that take the balance in cash, with no bank hold. I paid in euros, in banknotes, on the hood at the TNG airport lot.
+How much deposit do they really block at Tangier airport?
Zero with the no-deposit local agency via Localrent. With a DiscoverCars mid-tier (like Movis): 4,500 MAD. With Hertz/Thrifty at the terminal desk: up to 13,000 MAD.
+Do you need a car to visit Tangier?
Not for the city: the medina and seafront are walkable plus blue petits taxis (15-25 MAD). A car earns its keep to get out, Asilah, Cap Spartel, Chefchaouen.
An agency that is not in this table?
Thinking of booking elsewhere and wondering if it is safe? Give me the agency name and the city: I will tell you straight what I know, and add it to the file if it earns its place.
