Rent a car in Sardinia without getting played
Deposits found per agency (platforms and customer reviews)
Amounts cross-checked between booking platforms and dozens of customer reviews, not just the advertised figures.

⏲ Figures collected on 16 June 2026
Average market prices for an economy car (low season to high season), indicative only: they vary with the season, the model and how early you book. This is not the price paid, just a benchmark to compare.
If you book through this link, FirstHand earns a commission from the merchant, at no extra cost to you. That is what funds the on-the-ground checks.
Prefer a rated agency: Locauto via DiscoverCars
If you want a named agency, Locauto is well-rated on DiscoverCars in Olbia (around 9/10), and Only Sardinia is highly rated on Trustpilot. Check before booking that the offer includes the excess waiver, otherwise a big hold will be blocked.
Do you actually need a car in Sardinia?
Recommended, essential for the beaches. The ARST bus and the train only link the main towns, with sparse timetables outside June to September, and the best beaches have no service at all. For a city-only stay you can skip it.
When NOT to rent here
If you stay in the heart of Cagliari or Alghero with no plan for distant beaches: the centre is walkable and parking is awkward. The car becomes useful as soon as you aim for the Costa Smeralda, the coves or the hinterland.
Where you pick up the car
→ Shuttle from OLB airport to the lot
- 01At Olbia (OLB), a Car Rental Center sits about 50 m from the exit: the big chains are on site, no shuttle. At Cagliari (CAG), some desks are in the hall, the majors in a building 100 m away on foot.
- 02The low-cost brokers (Goldcar, Centauro, B-Rent…) send you by free shuttle to an off-site depot, where the surprise charges cluster.
- 03Photograph the car on every side AND underneath before leaving: in Sardinia, the rim scratch and the “vegetation damage” at return come up often.
The fuel trap
Dominant policy: full-to-full. The trap is the prepaid tank returned empty, billed above pump price and not refunded. Return at the level received and keep the gauge photo.
At the counter: what they will push
To refuse politely
- The counter “full insurance” pushed to lift the big hold, when you can cover it more cheaply online.
- Any separate fuel deposit stacked on top of the hold with no clear justification.
To insist on
- A signed condition report noting the rims and the underbody.
- A dated video of every side at pickup and return.
What my analysis reveals
I have not yet rented a car in Sardinia myself: this page is an analysis, not a field report. It cross-checks Trustpilot reviews, forums and the platform pages.
The dominant dispute here is the fake or exaggerated damage found at return, sometimes charged to the deposit weeks later: a rim scratch, a mark blamed on vegetation. The blocked excess can be huge, one account cites 2,300 € with Sixt in Olbia.
The recurring fix: avoid the low-cost brokers in the off-site depots, take cover with the excess included so no big sum is blocked, and photograph the car on every side and underneath before leaving. Dated proof is what wins a bank dispute.
The anxious questions (the real ones)
+Can you rent without a deposit in Sardinia?
Yes, through Localrent's “no deposit” filter or an agency with the excess waiver included. The big chains otherwise block large sums, up to 2,000 € and more by category.
+What is the most common scam in Sardinia?
The fake damage at return (rim, “vegetation”) charged to the deposit, sometimes weeks later. Photograph the car on every side and underneath at pickup, and avoid the low-cost brokers.
+Do you need a car in Sardinia?
Recommended, essential for the beaches and the hinterland: bus and train only cover the main towns. For a city-only stay you can skip it.
An agency that is not in this table?
Thinking of booking elsewhere and wondering if it is safe? Give me the agency name and the city: I will tell you straight what I know, and add it to the file if it earns its place.
