Average market prices for an economy car (low season to high season), indicative only: they vary with the season, the model and how early you book. This is not the price paid, just a benchmark to compare.

A no-pressure agency: Enterprise via DiscoverCars

Enterprise stands out as the most reliable in Provence (Marseille and Avignon TGV): “no upselling”, car in good condition, easy return, high ratings. Expect a deposit hold on the card, buy the excess waiver online. DiscoverCars also covers Avignon and Aix-en-Provence, which Localrent does not.

Do you actually need a car in Provence?

Recommended, close to essential for the Luberon. The main cities (Avignon, Aix, Arles, Marseille) are linked by TGV/TER, so a car is useless to hop between them. But the hilltop villages (Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes) have only 1 or 2 buses a day: without a car, they are nearly unreachable.

When NOT to rent here

If your trip hops between cities (Avignon, Aix, Arles, Marseille): the TGV/TER links them very well (Avignon to Arles in 17 min), a car is useless and costly to park. Rent for the Luberon (Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes), poorly served by buses.

Where you pick up the car

Shuttle from MRS airport to the lot

  1. 01At Marseille airport (MRS), there is no terminal pickup: the desks are in the car parks in front of Terminal 1, and a free shuttle goes there from Terminal 2.
  2. 02At Avignon TGV and Aix-en-Provence TGV, the desks are right in front of the station (Localrent only covers Marseille, for Avignon and Aix go through DiscoverCars).
  3. 03Be present at the condition check, insist on a signed report, and film the car from every angle: never drop the keys in a box without an agent.

The fuel trap

Full-to-full: the standard, and the cheapest, you only pay for what you use. To avoid: the prepaid full-to-empty, where unused fuel is not refunded. Refuel just before returning and keep the receipt.

At the counter: what they will push

To refuse politely

  • The “zero excess” option at the counter (15 to 40 €/day, often 20 to 30) if you already bought cover online.
  • The “your card does not work” ruse used to push the zero-excess option.

To insist on

  • Your presence at the condition check, signed, never a key drop in a box without an agent.
  • A video of the car from every angle at pickup and return.

What my analysis reveals

I have not yet rented a car in Provence myself: this page is an analysis, not a field report. It cross-checks TripAdvisor threads, Auto Europe reviews and forums.

The dominant scam is over-billing fake damage (scratch, rim) charged to the deposit after you leave, often at an out-of-hours return with no agent. A documented case in Marseille: over 1,000 € of damage billed by Avis, with photos dated about 10 hours after the return when the rim was intact. At the counter, the insurance pressure goes as far as the “your card does not work” ruse.

The fix: in Marseille, Localrent's “No Deposit” filter gives a genuine zero deposit; elsewhere, buy the excess cover online (from 3.45 €/day) rather than at the counter (20 to 30 €/day), because the “zero deposit” there is mostly a reimbursement, the hold staying blocked. Be present at the condition check, never drop the keys without an agent, and film the car. Under French law, the burden of proof for damage is on the rental company.

The anxious questions (the real ones)

+Can you rent without a deposit in Provence?

In Marseille, yes via Localrent's “No Deposit” filter. Elsewhere (Avignon, Aix), the deposit is the norm: the “zero deposit” sold online is often an excess reimbursement, the hold still blocked. Buy the cover online (from 3.45 €/day), not at the counter (20 to 30 €/day).

+What is the most common scam in Provence?

Over-billing fake damage charged to the deposit after you leave, especially at an out-of-hours return with no agent (an Avis case in Marseille: over 1,000 €, photos taken 10 hours later). Be present at the condition check and film the car. Under French law, the burden of proof is on the rental company.

+Do you need a car in Provence?

Recommended, close to essential for the Luberon (Gordes, Roussillon), poorly served. To hop between cities (Avignon, Aix, Arles), the TGV/TER is enough.
