Average market prices for an economy car (low season to high season), indicative only: they vary with the season, the model and how early you book. This is not the price paid, just a benchmark to compare.
If you book through this link, FirstHand earns a commission from the merchant, at no extra cost to you. That is what funds the on-the-ground checks.
The local references: CICAR or Autoreisen via DiscoverCars
CICAR and Autoreisen are the reference Canarian agencies: 100% no-excess cover included, no deposit or card pre-authorization, desk in the FUE arrivals hall. Autoreisen is often a notch cheaper than CICAR. The safest named option to leave no hold.
Do you actually need a car in Fuerteventura?
Essential. Fuerteventura is a large island (about 100 km long) with scattered sites, from the Corralejo dunes in the north to Cofete and Jandía in the south, and public transport is not enough to reach them.
When NOT to rent here
Few cases: if you stay in a single resort (Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste, Morro Jable) without moving. But as soon as you want the southern beaches (Cofete, Jandía), the dunes or the interior, a car is necessary.
Where you pick up the car
→ Desk right at FUE airport
- 01At Fuerteventura airport (FUE), the official agencies (including CICAR and Autoreisen) have their desk in the arrivals hall (Planta 0).
- 02Beware: some low-cost firms (Goldcar, Keddy, Orlando) have off-airport depots (Costa Antigua area) with a shuttle, which lengthens pickup.
- 03Get a signed condition report and film the car before leaving, especially through an off-site depot.
The fuel trap
With the locals (CICAR, Autoreisen) there is no prepayment: the car is delivered at a given level, to return identical. The trap to avoid: the prepaid full / return empty of some low-cost firms, billed at an inflated agency rate with no refund. Photograph the gauge at the start.
At the counter: what they will push
To refuse politely
- The “Super Relax” insurance pushed at the counter if your offer already includes zero excess.
- An inflated “fuel deposit”, barely refunded at return.
To insist on
- Written confirmation of “no deposit, zero excess” if you go through CICAR or Autoreisen.
- A signed condition report and a video of every side before departure.
What my analysis reveals
I have not yet rented a car in Fuerteventura myself: this page is an analysis, not a field report. It cross-checks Trustpilot and DiscoverCars reviews, the agencies' official pages and Aena.
The Canary strength holds here: CICAR and Autoreisen include zero excess in the rate and take no card pre-authorization. That is the opposite of low-cost firms like Goldcar, whose ultra-low headline price (sometimes 4 €/day) is paid for in counter pressure and surprise fees.
The dominant scam is Goldcar's bait & switch: they push a “Super Relax” insurance or a big deposit on arrival, and a “fuel deposit” is taken then poorly refunded (one case cited: 205.94 € taken, 92 € returned, a 114 € net loss). The fix: a local with the excess included, where there is nothing to sell you at the counter, and a video of the car at pickup.
The anxious questions (the real ones)
+Can you rent without a deposit in Fuerteventura?
Yes: the Canarian agencies CICAR and Autoreisen include zero excess in the rate and take no deposit or card pre-authorization. Localrent's “no deposit” filter leads to these agencies.
+What is the most common scam in Fuerteventura?
Goldcar's bait & switch: a very low headline price, then counter pressure and a fuel deposit taken then poorly refunded. Pick a local with the excess included and film the car at pickup.
+Do you need a car in Fuerteventura?
Essential: the island is about 100 km long and the sites (Corralejo dunes, Cofete, Jandía) are scattered and poorly served by public transport.
An agency that is not in this table?
Thinking of booking elsewhere and wondering if it is safe? Give me the agency name and the city: I will tell you straight what I know, and add it to the file if it earns its place.
