Average market prices for an economy car (low season to high season), indicative only: they vary with the season, the model and how early you book. This is not the price paid, just a benchmark to compare.
If you book through this link, FirstHand earns a commission from the merchant, at no extra cost to you. That is what funds the on-the-ground checks.
Prefer a rated agency: Guerin or CAEL via DiscoverCars
If you want a named agency, Guerin and CAEL are among the best-rated at Faro on DiscoverCars (around 9.2/10), described as having “no pushy salesmen”. Expect a deposit hold on the card: buy the cover online when booking, do not take it at the counter.
Do you actually need a car in Algarve?
Essential. The Algarve is spread out and public transport is limited to the Faro-Albufeira-Lagos axis. The beaches, coves and inland villages are not reachable without a car.
When NOT to rent here
If you stay in a single served resort (Albufeira, Lagos) with no plan to explore: the Faro-Albufeira-Lagos line and taxis will do. But as soon as you want the coves and the interior, the car becomes necessary again.
Where you pick up the car
→ Shuttle from FAO airport to the lot
- 01At Faro airport (FAO), some agencies have a desk in the arrivals hall (P4 lot about 100 m away), others a free shuttle from car park P4 (Tangerine point, roughly every 15 minutes).
- 02The counter is where the insurance sell hardens, often by claiming the cover bought online is invalid.
- 03Film every side of the car and note any chip on the condition report before leaving: the micro-scratches “found” at return are the local trap.
The fuel trap
Dominant policy: full-to-full. But disputes are frequent: contested fuel penalties and a separate fuel deposit stacked on the hold (a Goldcar case cites +150 €). Note the level at the start and photograph the gauge.
At the counter: what they will push
To refuse politely
- The counter insurance sold by claiming your online-bought cover is “invalid”: the dominant tactic at Faro.
- Inspection or cleaning fees added at return without justification (an Avis case cites 80 € for inspection).
To insist on
- A signed condition report noting every existing chip and scratch before departure.
- A dated video of every side at pickup and return.
What my analysis reveals
I have not yet rented a car in the Algarve myself: this page is an analysis, not a field report. It cross-checks DiscoverCars reviews, TripAdvisor and MoneySavingExpert forums.
The dominant scam at Faro is the counter insurance upsell: the agent claims your pre-bought online cover is invalid to sell you theirs, then at return bills micro-scratches not noted at pickup. One documented case: a DiscoverCars “full coverage” presented as invalid, and 1,560 € of damage plus 80 € inspection at another agency.
The point many miss: DiscoverCars' “Full Coverage” reimburses the excess but does not remove the deposit blocked at the counter (refund sometimes up to 28 or even 56 days). To leave nothing blocked, Localrent's “no deposit” filter points to local agencies with minimal or zero deposit. Either way: cover bought online, refuse at the counter, and video the car.
The anxious questions (the real ones)
+Can you rent without a deposit in the Algarve?
Through Localrent's “no deposit” filter (local agencies with minimal or zero deposit). Beware: DiscoverCars' “Full Coverage” reimburses damage but does not remove the hold blocked at the counter.
+What is the most common scam at Faro?
The counter insurance upsell, often by claiming your online cover is invalid, then micro-scratches billed at return. Buy cover online, refuse at the counter and film the car.
+Do you need a car in the Algarve?
Essential: outside the Faro-Albufeira-Lagos axis, transport reaches neither the coves nor the interior. A car is needed to really see the region.
An agency that is not in this table?
Thinking of booking elsewhere and wondering if it is safe? Give me the agency name and the city: I will tell you straight what I know, and add it to the file if it earns its place.
